Shkodër is the cultural capital of the north — an old, handsome city on the shore of the Balkans' largest lake, with a pastel Italianate main street, a serious café and bicycle culture, and a thousand years of history looking down from the walls of Rozafa Castle. For most travellers it's the launchpad for the Alps: this is where you catch the Komani Lake ferry and the minibuses up to Theth and Valbonë. But Shkodër deserves a day of its own, and it makes the most comfortable base in northern Albania.

Where to base yourself

Stay in or near the pedestrianised centre, along and around Rruga Kolë Idromeno — the pretty Italianate strip of cafés, restaurants and shops where the whole city strolls in the evening. Everything is walkable, prices are moderate (€35–€75 for a good room), and you're perfectly placed for early Alps departures. The essentials

Getting here and around

Shkodër is about two hours north of Tirana by frequent bus, and right on the Montenegro border (Podgorica is close). It's the hub for the north: the Komani Lake ferry to Valbonë and the Theth minibuses both leave from or near here, and it's the base for Velipojë beach.
