Velipojë

Wild Adriatic, lagoon birds, the Buna river delta

Velipojë is the beach at the very top of Albania, where the Buna river — the outflow of Lake Shkodra — meets the Adriatic in a broad, wild delta of sand, reed beds and lagoon. It's a long, flat, sandy beach that draws Shkodër families and increasingly campers and nature travellers who come for the birdlife and the sense of edge-of-the-map wilderness. This isn't a polished resort. It's a working seaside village with a protected wetland reserve on its doorstep, and that's exactly why it's worth the detour if you're already in the north.

Where to base yourself

Velipojë is simple and cheap — family guesthouses, campgrounds and modest beach hotels rather than resorts, with rooms from €25–€60 in summer. The village strings along the beach road; the quieter, wilder end is toward the Buna delta and the pine woods. Most visitors base in Shkodër (30–40 minutes inland, far more to do in the evenings) and come to Velipojë for the day, but a night by the delta is a genuine escape. The essentials

The beach is broad and sandy, good for long walks and warm, shallow swimming. The real draw, though, is nature: the Buna river delta and the Viluni lagoon form a protected reserve that's one of Albania's best birdwatching sites — pelicans, herons, flamingos in the shoulder seasons. Boat trips run into the delta and out to the sandy islets. Fresh fish and eel from the river are the local specialities. Our Velipojë beaches list covers where to swim.

Getting here and around

Velipojë is about 30–40 minutes from Shkodër, which is itself two hours from Tirana and right on the Montenegro border. Buses run from Shkodër in summer; a car is best for reaching the delta and the quieter beach ends. It's very much a warm-season destination, at its best from June to September.
