Shkodër — Lake city, Rozafa Castle, gateway to the Albanian Alps

Shkodër is one of Albania's oldest cities and the cultural capital of the north, spread across a plain where three rivers meet at the foot of the Albanian Alps. For most travellers it is the gateway to the mountains — the place you spend a night before the Koman ferry or the road to Theth — but it rewards anyone who lingers. This is a city of bicycles, café terraces, Austro-Hungarian and Italianate facades, and an easy Catholic-Muslim coexistence you feel in a skyline of minarets and bell towers.

What to see

The unmissable sight is Rozafa Castle, on a hill above the confluence of the Buna, Drin and Kir rivers. Its ramparts frame one of the great views in Albania — Lake Shkodër on one side, the Alps behind, the Adriatic haze to the west. The castle carries the country's most famous legend, of a woman walled into the foundations to make them hold.

Down in town, the long pedestrian spine of Rruga Kolë Idromeno is where the evening passeggiata happens, past the reopened Lead Mosque, the Marubi photography museum (a remarkable archive of nineteenth-century Balkan life), and the site of memory for those persecuted under communism.

Lake and mountains

Lake Shkodër, shared with Montenegro, is best seen from Shirokë and Zogaj, lakeside villages a short drive west where you eat carp and eel at the water's edge. To the east, the Buna river and the wetlands toward Velipojë draw birdwatchers.

Shkodër is the road-and-water hub for the Alps: minibuses and the famous Koman Lake ferry leave early for Valbonë, and vans run to Theth over an improved mountain road.

When to go and practicalities

Late spring and early autumn are ideal — the mountain trails are open and the heat is gentle. Summer is warm and busy with trekkers passing through. The town is flat and compact, so rent a bike. Try the local lake fish and, in season, chestnuts and mountain honey from the surrounding highlands.
