Tirana is the loudest, most colourful, most contradictory city in the Balkans — a former communist capital that woke up in colour. Its buildings are painted in saturated geometries, its cafés are full from breakfast to midnight, and its energy is the energy of a place that has spent thirty years reinventing itself in public and isn't finished. Most travellers use it as a one-night stopover before the beach. That's a mistake. Tirana is the city that explains the rest of the country — its bunkers, its young democracy, its food, its restless sense of humour about itself. Give it two or three days.

Where to base yourself

For a first visit, sleep in or near Blloku — the formerly-forbidden Party district that is now the city's café and nightlife core. You'll be a short walk from Skanderbeg Square, the Pyramid and everything open after 10pm. Mid-range hotels here run €60–€100 in summer; serviced apartments are common and often better value for two.
