Durrës is Albania's oldest and second-largest city, and it wears all its eras at once. Founded by Greek colonists as Epidamnos in 627 BC, it became one of the most important ports of the Roman Empire — the western end of the Via Egnatia to Constantinople — and the Balkans' largest Roman amphitheatre still sits, half-excavated, right in the middle of the modern town. Today it's a busy working port and the closest beach city to Tirana, which means it's where the capital comes to swim. That gives Durrës a split personality: serious ancient history on one side, a long, unpretentious, family-holiday beach strip on the other.

Where to base yourself

For history and city life, stay in the old centre near the amphitheatre and the port — walkable, atmospheric, close to the good restaurants. For a beach holiday, the resort strip runs south through Currila, Golem and Mali i Robit, kilometres of sand lined with hotels aimed squarely at Albanian and Kosovar families; it's cheerful, busy and cheap (€35–€80 in summer). Getting here and around

Durrës is the easiest coast to reach — 40 minutes from Tirana and its airport by road, with frequent buses and a rail link. It's also a major ferry port with connections to Bari and Ancona in Italy.
