Krujë is where Albania keeps its national myth. This small town clings to a mountainside 45 minutes north of Tirana, and it was from the castle here that Gjergj Kastrioti — Skanderbeg, the country's great 15th-century hero — held off the Ottoman Empire for a quarter-century. The castle, the Skanderbeg museum inside it and the restored Ottoman bazaar below make Krujë the single best half-day trip from the capital, and the most rewarding place in the country to buy something genuinely handmade rather than mass-produced.

Where to base yourself

Most people visit Krujë as a day trip from Tirana and don't stay over — it's that close. Getting here and around
