The southern gateway

Sarandë is where most travellers first set foot in southern Albania — the ferry from Corfu docks here, and the whole horseshoe bay turns gold at sunset. It's a working city of forty thousand that quadruples in August, ringed by pastel apartments stacked up the hillside and fronted by a two-and-a-half-kilometre promenade that is, effectively, the town's living room. Nobody comes to Sarandë for Sarandë alone. They come because within an hour's drive sit four of the best day trips in the country, and Sarandë is the most comfortable place to sleep between them.

Where to base yourself

The smart move is anywhere on or just behind the Lungomare promenade — you walk to dinner, the sea breeze keeps rooms cool, and every furgon and taxi leaves from here. Sea-view rooms run €60–€110 in peak season, half that in May or October. The quieter southern marina end has newer apartment blocks with rooftop pools; the northern hillside above the port is the budget zone, cheaper but a real climb home after dinner. The essentials

Walk the promenade at least once at sunset — it's how you read the city. Climb (or taxi) to Lëkurësi Castle on the hill for the best panorama and a sunset beer. In town, the fifth-century synagogue mosaics are an under-visited surprise you'll often have to yourself. Getting here and around

The Corfu ferry is the easiest international arrival — three to four crossings a day in summer, 30–70 minutes, bring your passport. Tirana airport is about four and a half hours by road. In town you walk; for the day trips, furgon minibuses are €1–€2 each way, a full-day taxi covering Butrint, Ksamil and the Blue Eye runs €60–€80 for the car, and renting wheels pays off if you're also driving the Riviera north.
