Korçë is Albania's most European-feeling city, and its least-visited surprise. Sitting on a high plateau in the far east, near the North Macedonia border, it's cooler, greener and more genteel than the rest of the country — a place of tree-lined boulevards, a restored Ottoman bazaar, the country's oldest brewery, and a distinctive musical tradition of serenata korçare love songs. It gets cold enough to be Albania's only real winter destination, and it has a café-and-culture atmosphere that rewards travellers who make the long drive east.

Where to base yourself

Stay in or near the restored Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjetër), the beautifully renovated heart of the city, now full of cafés, restaurants and boutique guesthouses in the old merchant buildings. Getting here and around

Korçë is a long haul — about three and a half to four hours southeast of Tirana, over mountain roads that are scenic but slow. Buses run daily; a car gives you the nearby villages and a beautiful route past Lake Ohrid if you approach from Pogradec. The centre is flat and walkable.
