Pogradec is Albania's lakeside resort — a relaxed town on the shore of Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in the world and a UNESCO natural site shared with North Macedonia. The water is astonishingly clear, the promenade is made for slow evenings, and the town has a gentle, unhurried holiday feeling that Albanians have loved for generations. Where to base yourself

Stay along or near the lakefront promenade, where the hotels, cafés and fish restaurants cluster and where the town takes its evening stroll. Rooms are moderate (€35–€70) and often come with a lake view. Pogradec is a summer town primarily, though the shoulder seasons are lovely and quiet. The essentials

The lake is everything — swim in the clear water, walk or cycle the promenade, and eat koran, the prized Ohrid trout, at a lakefront restaurant (see our Pogradec restaurants list). Just south, the Drilon springs and their landscaped water gardens are a beautiful, cool half-day — crystal springs, willows, little boats and a shaded promenade. Continue to the village of Tushemisht, one of the prettiest on the lake. Across the border (or visible from it) lies the historic town of Ohrid itself, if you have a day and your papers.

Getting here and around

Pogradec is about two and a half to three hours southeast of Tirana, on the road toward the North Macedonia border. Buses run daily; a car lets you combine it easily with Korçë (about an hour away) and the Drilon and Tushemisht sites. The lakefront is flat and walkable or cyclable.
