Berat is where Albania slows down. It's a UNESCO-listed Ottoman town of white stacked houses climbing two hillsides above the Osumi river, each with the same rows of rectangular windows that earned it the nickname "city of a thousand windows." Above it all sits a castle that is still a living neighbourhood — stone houses, families and churches inside the medieval walls. Where to base yourself

Getting here and around

Berat is about two and a half hours by car or bus from Tirana, three from Sarandë via the inland road. Direct buses run several times daily; the trip is comfortable and cheap (€5–€10).
