Ksamil vs Zakynthos: Albania's "Maldives" or Greece's icon in 2027?

Turquoise water, prices, crowds and the drive from Romania — an honest Ksamil vs Zakynthos comparison for the 2027 season.

Ksamil is routinely called "the Maldives of Europe." Zakynthos (Zante) is already an institution: Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) is one of the most photographed images in Greece. If you're choosing between the two for a turquoise-water holiday in 2027, here is the honest, unfiltered comparison.

The water and beaches

Surprisingly close. Ksamil has small coves with white pebbles and incredible turquoise Ionian water, plus little islands a short swim offshore. Zakynthos plays at another scale: Navagio is a dramatic beach framed by hundreds of metres of limestone cliff, reachable only by boat, plus the Blue Caves. Ksamil wins on "walk straight from the village into the water"; Zakynthos wins on landscape drama and variety.

Prices in 2027

This is the difference that matters for your budget. Albania stays noticeably cheaper than Greece for accommodation, food and drink — even though peak-season Ksamil (July–August) has risen a lot in recent years. A fish dinner, a coffee on the promenade, a day bed: Ksamil still costs less than the Zakynthos equivalent. We broke the numbers down per day in Albania vs Greece: what a holiday really costs.

Crowds

Both are victims of their own success. Ksamil in July–August is packed and the small coves fill by mid-morning — go early or late. Navagio became so crowded that access was restricted for safety, so you mostly see it from the clifftop viewpoint or the water. For real space, both need shoulder season: early June or the second half of September 2027.

Getting there from Romania

  • Ksamil: fly to Tirana (Wizz Air from Bucharest, ~1h45) then 4–5 hours south, OR — smarter — fly to Corfu and take the 30-minute ferry to Sarandë, then 20 minutes to Ksamil. See how to get to Ksamil. Driving from Romania is a two-day trip.
  • Zakynthos: has its own airport (ZTH), usually reached by charter or a connection from Romania.

When to pick each

Pick Ksamil for the best value, turquoise water you step into from the village, and a short transfer from Corfu. It's the relaxed, affordable beach break.

Pick Zakynthos for postcard landscape at scale (Navagio, Blue Caves), mature tourist infrastructure and an island you explore by car — at a higher price.

Verdict for 2027

For a first taste of "Maldives water," Ksamil delivers 80% of the feeling at a fraction of the price — and it keeps getting easier to reach. Zakynthos stays the icon, but it's the bigger-budget holiday. Compare more Greek options on myGreece.online or the north-Aegean coast on Thassos.online.
