The Riviera vs the Albanian Alps: which to choose for 2027

Turquoise beaches or glacial mountains? Albania's two faces, who each suits, when to go and whether you can combine them in 2027.

Albania is two completely different holidays in one small country. The Riviera in the south — Sarandë, Ksamil, Himarë, Dhërmi — is turquoise Ionian water, beach clubs and grilled fish. The Albanian Alps (Accursed Mountains) in the north — Theth, Valbonë, Lake Koman — are glacial valleys, half-board guesthouses and the best hiking in the Balkans. Here's how to choose for 2027.

In short: who each suits

  • Riviera = relaxing, sun, swimming, nightlife, families with small kids. Zero effort, instant reward.
  • Alps = hiking, cool air, dramatic scenery, disconnection. A bit of fitness and logistics required, quiet in return.

Want to lie on a beach with a cold beer? Riviera. Want to cross a mountain pass with a 360° view? The Alps.

When to go in 2027

A key difference: they don't share a season.

  • Riviera: the sea is good roughly June–September, warmest in July–August (and most crowded). For balance, early June or the second half of September 2027.
  • Alps: the Theth–Valbonë trail is comfortable mid-June to early October; July–August is the safest window for the high passes.

The overlap is July–September — the only time you could, in theory, do both.

How long you need

  • Riviera only: a week from one base (Ksamil or Sarandë). See where to stay on the Riviera.
  • Alps only: the classic Shkodër → Koman ferry → Valbonë → Theth loop is 4–5 days.
  • Both: 10–12 days minimum, and still brisk. Don't cram them into one week.

Can you combine them?

Yes, but they're not close. Mountain roads are slow — Riviera to Theth is 6–8 hours of driving plus the Koman ferry. It works best as one long road trip: enter via the north (Alps first, while fresh for hiking), then drop south to the beach. A 7-day driving itinerary shows the logistics.

Verdict for 2027

On a first visit, choose the Riviera — easier, cheaper to reach, instant turquoise "wow." Save the Alps for a second trip. If you only have one week, don't mix them — pick one and do it well.
