Durrës — Roman amphitheatre, Adriatic beaches, Albania's busiest port

Durrës is Albania's oldest and second-largest city, an Adriatic port that has been trading, defending and sunbathing for 2,500 years. Ancient Dyrrachium was the western terminus of the Roman Via Egnatia; today the same shoreline is the country's most accessible beach escape, half an hour from Tirana. It is not the Riviera — the water is calm and the sand golden rather than turquoise — but few places pack this much history and seaside into one easy stop.

What not to miss

The Roman amphitheatre, tucked into the old town, is the largest in the Balkans and once seated tens of thousands; you can walk its tunnels and see an early Christian mosaic inside. Nearby, the Venetian tower and stretches of the Byzantine city wall anchor a compact old quarter worth an hour's wander. The Archaeological Museum along the seafront collects the finds — Illyrian, Greek and Roman — that explain why this port mattered so much.

Beaches and the seafront

The long sandy bay running south toward Golem and Durrës Plazh is the city's summer engine: shallow, warm water and a wall of resorts, bars and beach clubs. It is family-friendly and lively rather than pristine — for quieter sand, drive a little further south.

Stay in the old town for history and walkability, or along the beach strip for a straightforward sun-and-sea holiday. Being a port, Durrës eats seafood: grilled fish, mussels, and the fish soups and risottos of the Adriatic. Pair with a cold Korça beer or a local white.

When to visit

June and September are ideal — warm sea, thinner crowds. July and August are hot and packed with domestic holidaymakers. Spring and autumn suit the ruins and the seafront promenade.

Practical tip: Durrës makes an easy first or last night of a trip, close to Tirana's airport, and a painless base if you are catching a ferry to Italy.
