Theth to Valbona Hike — Complete Guide 2026
Everything you need for the Theth–Valbona hike — distance, difficulty, accommodation, transport (Koman Lake ferry), packing list, day-by-day plan.
The hike between Theth and Valbona — two stone-built mountain villages in the Albanian Alps — is one of Europe's great single-day walks. 17 kilometres, 1000m of climb, 8 hours, through the Cursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna), via the 1817m Valbona Pass.
This guide covers everything: which direction to walk, where to sleep, how to get there (the legendary Koman Lake ferry is part of the journey), what to pack, and what it costs.

Which direction?
Theth → Valbona is recommended. Why:
- More dramatic scenery as you climb (waterfalls and the Theth valley behind you)
- The Koman Lake ferry is a logical end if you continue to Tirana
- More guesthouses in Theth = easier accommodation pre-hike
But many people hike Valbona → Theth — both work. We'll describe the Theth → Valbona direction.
