The basics
- Distance: 17 km point-to-point (Theth → Valbonë).
- Elevation gain: 950 m (eastbound) or 1,200 m (westbound).
- Time: 6–8 hours, depending on fitness.
- Difficulty: Moderate — well marked, not technical, but a long day.
- Best season: Mid-June to mid-October.
Direction
Do it eastbound (Theth → Valbonë) — the descent is gentler. The pass (Qafa e Valbonës, 1,800 m) is at km 7.
Logistics
- Drop your luggage at your guesthouse in Theth.
- Hike with a daypack only.
- Arrange luggage transfer (€30–€40) with a local driver — your bag meets you in Valbonë.
- Or do a 2-day round trip: night 1 Theth, hike to Valbonë, night 2 Valbonë, return next day.
What to bring
- 2–3 L of water (refill at the spring near the pass).
- Hat, sun cream, layered clothes.
- Hiking boots (sneakers OK if you're experienced).
- Snacks; you'll get a full meal at the small café halfway up.
After
From Valbonë, the next morning: drive to Lake Komani ferry, cross, return to Shkodër. The full circuit Theth → Valbonë → Komani → Shkodër is one of the great Balkan adventures.
