Kanina Castle

Above Vlorë, Kanina's ramparts climb a hillside that most visitors reach by the paved road rather than risk the muddy hiking trail after rain. Once inside the perimeter wall, the payoff is a wide sweep over Vlorë Bay, the hinterland and, on clear days, snow-capped peaks in the distance, often with restoration crews still at work nearby. Reviewers frequently mention having the ruins almost to themselves, occasionally swapping notes with a local archaeologist who lingers on site. Time it for late afternoon, when the light over the bay turns gold.
