Valbonë — alpine valley at the end of the trail
Limestone walls, glacial river beds, and the eastern terminus of the iconic Theth–Valbona hike — Valbonë is the wider, wilder cousin of Theth.
Why Valbonë?
Valbonë is dramatic in scale — a wide glacial valley flanked by 2,500 m peaks and a riverbed that doubles as a road in summer. Most arrive after the Theth–Valbona hike; some come for the river vibes alone.
When to visit
Mid-June to October. Snow can linger on the high pass into early summer.
Where to stay
Quku i Valbonës (the heart of the valley) for guesthouses, Margjeka for boutique alpine, Hotel Tradita for the riverbank. €30–€80 half-board.
What to eat
Lamb cooked over wood, petulla (fried bread), wild herb teas, river trout.
Don't miss
- The Theth–Valbona trail (do it eastbound for the easier descent)
- Maja e Rosit — half-day climb above the valley
- Çerem — the higher hamlet up the valley
- Sunrise photos at the river bend below Quku
How to get there
From Shkodër: ferry across Lake Komani (3h dramatic ride), then minibus to Valbonë (2h). The lake ferry alone is worth the trip.
