Top day trips from Tirana

Tirana makes an unusually good base. Within an easy drive or a short furgon (shared minibus) ride, you can reach an Ottoman bazaar, Roman ruins, a mountain lake and a Unesco-listed city — then be back for dinner in Blloku. These are the day trips worth building a Tirana stay around.

Krujë — castle, bazaar, Skanderbeg

Under an hour north, Krujë clings to a mountainside around the fortress where the national hero Skanderbeg held off the Ottomans. Its restored Old Bazaar is the country's best for antiques, filigree and hand-woven textiles, and the castle museum and views over the plain to the sea justify the trip on their own.

Durrës — the Roman coast

Half an hour west lies Albania's second city and its long Adriatic beaches. The Roman amphitheatre, one of the largest in the Balkans, sits half-buried in the old town, and the seafront is lined with fish restaurants — an easy pairing of history and a swim.

Berat — the city of a thousand windows

About two hours south, Unesco-listed Berat is the most beautiful day trip of all, its Ottoman quarters of white stone houses stacked up two hillsides beneath a still-inhabited castle. Long for a day but very doable; better still as an overnight.

Mountains and water close to the city

For nature without the distance, ride the Dajti cable car up the mountain that overlooks Tirana for cool air and lunch with a view. Bovilla Lake, with its short hike up Gamti Mountain to a knife-edge viewpoint over turquoise water, is a favourite half-day, while the Pëllumbas cave and the Erzen canyon offer an easy adventure just southeast of the city.

Getting around

A rental car gives the most freedom, but furgons and buses leave regularly for Krujë, Durrës and Berat from Tirana's terminals. Start early in summer to beat the heat, and confirm return times in advance — service thins out by late afternoon.
