Tirana's food scene has matured fast. A decade ago the city offered hearty home cooking and little else; today it spans wood-fired traditional taverns, ambitious modern-Albanian kitchens and a rising wave of natural-wine and small-plates places — much of it still remarkably good value. Here is how to eat well across the capital.

Modern Albanian

The most exciting cooking in Tirana reinterprets the country's own pantry — mountain herbs, cornmeal, foraged greens, lamb and fresh cheese — with contemporary technique. Places in this vein, such as the well-known farm-to-table kitchen Mullixhiu near the Grand Park, treat rural Albanian ingredients seriously and change with the seasons. Book ahead for the best of them, especially at weekends.

Traditional taverns

For the classics, look to family-run taverns where the menu barely changes because it never needs to. Expect fërgesë (peppers, tomato and cottage cheese baked to a cream), tavë kosi (baked lamb and rice under a tangy yoghurt crust), slow-cooked qofte and grilled meats. The lanes around Pazari i Ri (the New Bazaar) are thick with them, and it is the best single neighbourhood for a first, unfussy Albanian meal.

Where to wander

• Blloku — the former communist-elite quarter, now the hub for modern bistros, pizza, sushi and late-night bars.
• Pazari i Ri — traditional grills, mezze and the freshest market produce.
• The centre — reliable all-rounders near Skanderbeg Square for a quick, central lunch.

Practical tips

Lunch is typically served earlier and dinner later than in northern Europe, with Albanians often sitting down from around 8pm. Portions are generous and prices low by Western standards. Coffee culture is central — a long, unhurried espresso or macchiato is how meals begin and end. And keep some cash on hand: cards are widely accepted in the centre, less so in the smallest family places.
