Hiking trail to the bunkers at Mt. Melesin

This trail climbs Mount Melesin above Gjirokastër toward a cluster of Cold War-era bunkers, part of the thousands Enver Hoxha's regime scattered across Albania, and the ones up here still stare out from the hillside over the Drino valley much as they did decades ago. The pull is really the view from the top: Gjirokastër's stone old town and its hilltop castle laid out below, with the valley stretching toward the mountains beyond. No official difficulty is listed, but expect a genuine climb rather than a stroll, and plan for it between May and October when the path is dry and clear.
