Dhërmi — beach clubs, festivals and the Llogara plunge

Dhërmi is the Riviera at full saturation: a white village spilling down a green mountainside, some of the most vivid turquoise water in the country, and — for a few weeks each summer — the loudest parties in Albania. It's beautiful and it's busy, and if you time it right you can have either the quiet version or the loud one.

Two Dhërmis

There is an old upper village and a lower beach strip, and they feel like different places. The upper village is stone houses, churches and narrow lanes climbing the slope, with the Byzantine Monastery of St. Mary among the pines above. Down at sea level, Dhërmi beach and neighbouring Drymades are where the sunbeds, beach bars and music live. Just south, a footpath and a rough track lead to Gjipe, a dramatic cove at the mouth of a canyon that rewards the effort of getting there.

Festivals and nightlife

Dhërmi's beaches host some of the region's biggest electronic music festivals in summer, drawing crowds from across the Balkans and beyond. If dancing until sunrise is the plan, this is your place — book accommodation early, because festival weeks sell out. If it isn't, simply come in June or September, when the same beaches are calm and swimmable.

The Llogara plunge

Arriving from the north is half the experience. The road climbs to the Llogara Pass at over 1,000 metres, through alpine pine forest, then drops in a series of switchbacks straight down to the sea — one of the great coastal descents in Europe. Stop at the top for the view before you plunge toward the coast.

Practical notes

Come by car if you can; parking is tight in August but the freedom is worth it. Summer buses run the coast road. For swimming and calm, target the shoulder months; for the party, July and August. Either way, the water does not disappoint.
