Petrelë Castle

What makes Petrelë unusual among Albania's castles is that its Byzantine sixth-century tower has been folded into a working restaurant, and ingredients still arrive the traditional way — carried up the kilometre-long stone path by donkey, according to regulars. Visitors park for free in the village square below and climb roughly ten to fifteen minutes to reach the terrace, where a fireplace, good coffee and simple Albanian dishes accompany views over the Erzen valley. Some come just to look; most reviewers say the trip is worth it as much for a plate of food or a drink on top as for the fortress walls themselves.
