Albania's tourism boom shows no sign of cooling, and 2026 brings the biggest structural changes the country's travel map has seen in years. Here is what is genuinely new — and what it means for how you plan a trip.

A second gateway in the south

For years, almost everyone flew into Tirana and drove three to four hours to reach the Riviera. The new international airport at Vlorë is set to change that, putting the southern coast — Dhërmi, Himarë, Sarandë, Ksamil — within a short transfer of a runway for the first time. Even as schedules ramp up, expect it to gradually pull more direct traffic toward the south and ease the summer bottleneck through Tirana.

More capacity on the coast

The Riviera continues to add rooms, boutique stays and better roads, with ongoing upgrades to the coastal route over the Llogara Pass and around the main resort villages. The upside is easier travel and more choice; the trade-off is that beloved spots like Ksamil keep getting busier. Booking ahead for July and August matters more than ever.

Cruises and the sea

Sarandë has grown as a cruise call, bringing day visitors from Corfu and beyond, while ferry and excursion links along the Ionian keep expanding. On Lake Komani, the ferry that carries hikers toward Valbona remains one of the great journeys in the Balkans and continues to see rising demand.

Use that to your advantage by going in the shoulder season, basing yourself outside the single most crowded villages, and building in the northern Alps or a heritage city like Berat or Gjirokastër to balance the coast.
