Albania vs. Greece, Croatia, Montenegro — where it wins, where it doesn't

Albania is now spoken of in the same breath as Greece, Croatia and Montenegro — the flattering comparison of a decade ago has become a genuine rivalry. Here's an honest reckoning of where it beats its neighbours and where it still trails.

Where Albania wins

Price. Nothing on this coast is cheaper. A Riviera seafood dinner, a night's guesthouse, a coffee — all a fraction of what you'd pay across the strait in Corfu or up in Dubrovnik. For value, Albania is in a class of its own.

Empty space. Croatia's best coves are photographed to death; Albania still has beaches like Borsh and the coves near Gjipe where you can find room in shoulder season. The Alps around Theth and Valbonë feel wilder and less packaged than Montenegro's Durmitor.

Welcome. The hospitality here — rooted in besa — is warmer and less transactional than in more touristed neighbours. You are treated as a guest, not a footfall.

Where it still trails

Croatia wins on polish: the Dalmatian towns, the marinas, the seamless island-hopping, Plitvice's boardwalks. Everything works, and it charges accordingly.

Greece wins on the set piece — the Cycladic light, Santorini and Milos, the great ancient sites, and ferries that actually run to timetable. Albania's ruins (Butrint, Apollonia) are superb but fewer and quieter.

Montenegro wins on compactness and the sheer drama of the Bay of Kotor, all reachable in a long weekend.

Albania's weak points are practical: bumpier roads, thinner public transport, fewer direct flights, and infrastructure racing to catch up with its own popularity.

The verdict

Come to Albania if you want value, warmth, and coastline that still feels found rather than sold — and you don't mind a rougher edge. Choose the neighbours if seamless logistics and marquee sights matter more than discovery. For many travellers now, Albania is the one worth catching before it changes.
