Top wine regions in Albania

Albania has made wine for at least three thousand years — some of Europe's oldest cultivated vines grew on these hills — yet the modern industry is small, family-run and largely unknown beyond the country. That is precisely its charm. Tasting here means sitting in a working cellar with the owner, pouring native grapes you will not find anywhere else. These are the regions to seek out.

Berat and the Myzeqe plain

The country's most established wine country spreads around Berat and the villages of Roskovec and Ndroq. Family wineries here have revived indigenous grapes such as the red Shesh i Zi and white Shesh i Bardhë, documented centuries ago. Several cellars welcome visitors for tastings and lunch on a terrace above the vines, an easy add-on to a Unesco city visit.

The northern hills — Lezhë and Kallmet

Around Lezhë and the village of Kallmet grows the grape of the same name, Kallmet, producing deep, structured reds that many consider Albania's finest. The rolling country between Shkodër and the coast has a mild, Mediterranean climate ideal for the variety.

The south — Përmet and Leskovik

In the Vjosa valley near Përmet, the aromatic white Debinë thrives in cool mountain air, made both still and lightly sparkling. This is also the home of the fruit preserves and raki that fill every village table. Nearby Leskovik was famous for wine before the communist era and is slowly returning to it.

Around Tirana and Korçë

Day-trippers from the capital can reach modern cellars in the hills near Tirana within an hour, while the highland Korçë region — cooler and higher — turns out crisp whites alongside its celebrated beer.

How to visit

Albania has no polished wine-tourism circuit, and that is the point. Message ahead, come hungry, and expect generosity — a tasting usually turns into a long lunch. Autumn, around the September harvest, is the most atmospheric time to go, though cellars pour year-round.
