Top family-friendly beaches in Albania

Not every beautiful beach is a beach you can bring a four-year-old to. Albania's most photogenic coves are often steep, pebbly and reached by a scramble — magnificent for couples, miserable with a pushchair. The good news is that the country also has some of the gentlest, most family-suited coast in the Mediterranean, if you know where to point the car. The rule of thumb is simple: for calm, shallow, sandy water go north to the Adriatic; for turquoise clarity with a bit more effort, go south to the Ionian.

The sandy Adriatic north

The stretch from Shkodër down to Durrës is where Albanian and Kosovar families have holidayed for generations, and for good reason. Velipojë and Shëngjin offer wide, flat, sandy beaches with water that stays shallow for a long way out — ideal for small children and easy on tired parents. Further south, Lalzit Bay and the Golem–Durrës coast add sand, gradual entry and plenty of loungers, cafes and shade. These are working family beaches, lively rather than pristine, and all the better for it when you need a bucket, a spade and a snack within reach.

The calmer Ionian south

On the Riviera, look for the long, gently shelving beaches rather than the dramatic pockets. Borsh has one of the longest beaches in the country, calm and uncrowded at its edges. Ksamil's shallow turquoise water and the little islets you can wade toward are a genuine hit with kids, though it gets very busy in peak summer — come early or late in the day. Livadhi, near Himarë, is another broad, swimmable choice.

Practical tips

For the calmest sea and warmest shallows, June and September beat the August crush. Bring water shoes for the pebble beaches of the south, pack shade of your own where cafes are sparse, and always check the afternoon wind, which can pick up quickly along the Ionian. With a little planning, Albania is one of the easier coastlines in Europe to travel with young children.
