Osum Canyon rafting — the wild side of inland Albania

Albania's coast gets the attention, but its wildest half-day is inland, in a limestone gorge most visitors never hear about. The Osum Canyon cuts for kilometres through the Skrapar highlands southeast of Berat, its walls rising sheer to sixty or eighty metres and pinching, in places, to a corridor only a few metres wide. For a few weeks each spring, when the snow melts off the surrounding mountains and the river runs full, you can raft straight through the heart of it.

Why spring is the only season

The Osum is a snowmelt river, and timing is everything. From roughly April into May the water is high, cold and fast enough to carry a raft the length of the gorge. By high summer the level drops and the canyon becomes a walking and swimming route instead — beautiful, but not a rafting trip. If floating the river is the reason you're coming, plan for spring and accept that exact conditions shift year to year with the weather.

What the trip is like

Most operators run it as a half-day out of Berat, driving up to the put-in near Çorovodë, kitting you out in wetsuit, helmet and life jacket, and guiding you down in inflatable rafts. The water is a mix of calm green pools and short, splashy rapids — exciting rather than extreme in a normal season, which makes it a genuine option for fit beginners as well as families with older children. Between the rapids you drift under overhanging cliffs, past small waterfalls and stretches where the sky narrows to a ribbon overhead. Expect to get thoroughly wet and properly cold; the snowmelt does not care that it's sunny.

Practical notes

• Go with a licensed operator — this is not a self-guided river. Book ahead in spring, when the good weekends fill.
• Bring a swimsuit, a towel, water shoes or old trainers you don't mind soaking, and dry clothes for afterwards.
• Base yourself in Berat, the honey-coloured UNESCO town, and make a day of it: the canyon in the morning, then Skrapar's famous raki and a slow lunch on the way back.

Come in spring, and inland Albania shows a side the beaches never do — cold, loud, green and completely wild.
