Avoiding the crowds — why September is the new July

For a decade the Albanian Riviera followed the rest of the Mediterranean into a single, punishing high season. By the first week of August, the coast road over the Llogara Pass backs up with cars, Ksamil's little islands disappear under sun-loungers, and a room in Dhërmi costs what it would in Puglia. The heat sits heavy, the beaches are shoulder-to-shoulder, and the sea — the whole reason you came — is the one thing that stays perfect. The obvious fix is also the easiest: come three or four weeks later.

Why September works

The Ionian keeps the warmth it banked all summer. Sea temperatures peak in late August and barely move through September, so the water off Himarë, Borsh or Jalë is still around the mid-twenties well into October. What changes is everything on land. Balkan and Italian families go home for the school year, the day-trippers thin out, and towns that felt frantic in August exhale. You can park in Sarandë, get a table on the water without waiting, and swim off a beach that isn't fully colonised by umbrellas.

What to expect

• Warm, calmer sea and softer light for photographs, especially early and late in the day.
• Lower room rates and real availability, even in Ksamil and Qeparo, where August books out months ahead.
• Long, dry days — Albanian autumn arrives slowly, and rain rarely settles in before mid-October.
• Grape and olive harvest inland, so a Riviera trip pairs neatly with Berat or the wine villages around Përmet.

Practical notes

Book the first three weeks of September if you want peak beach weather with none of the crush; the last week begins to cool in the evenings. Some beach clubs and smaller guesthouses start winding down after mid-month, so confirm your spot is still open rather than assuming. Bring a light layer for evenings and for the drive over Llogara, where the air is always cooler than the coast. And if pure sunbathing matters less to you than empty trails and clear skies, October on the Riviera is quieter still — the swimming just gets braver.
