Weather and climate in Albania — coast vs. mountains

Albania packs a startling range of weather into a country you can drive across in a day. The coast is classic Mediterranean, the northern and eastern mountains are genuinely alpine, and the inland basins around Korçë and the eastern border feel continental. Understanding these three Albanias is the key to packing right and timing your trip.

The coast — Mediterranean and forgiving

From Velipojë in the north down through Durrës, Vlorë and the Riviera to Sarandë and Ksamil, summers are hot, dry and reliably sunny. July and August routinely sit in the low-to-mid 30s°C, with warm sea and almost no rain. Winters are mild and wet — green, quiet, and often pleasant enough for long coastal walks, though many Riviera businesses close. The sea is warmest from July into October, and swimming stays comfortable well into autumn.

The mountains — alpine and serious

The Albanian Alps around Theth and Valbonë, and the Korab and Jezerca ranges, follow different rules. Snow lingers on the high passes into late spring, and the classic Theth–Valbona trail is realistically walkable roughly June to October. Summer days are warm but evenings cool sharply, and afternoon thunderstorms build fast — never judge a mountain day by a hot morning in Tirana. Winters bring heavy snow and closed roads.

The inland east — continental

Around Korçë, Pogradec and Lake Ohrid, altitude changes everything. Winters are cold with regular snow, summers are warm but fresher than the coast, and spring and autumn are crisp. This is the part of Albania that most surprises visitors expecting a purely Mediterranean country.

When to go

Late May to mid-June and all of September are the sweet spot: warm sea, open businesses, thinner crowds. July and August are peak — hot, lively and busy on the Riviera. Choose spring or autumn for hiking and cities, and midsummer only if the beach is the whole point.
