SIM cards and internet in Albania

Staying connected in Albania is easy and cheap. Mobile data is fast and inexpensive, 4G reaches almost everywhere a traveller goes, and a local prepaid SIM costs a fraction of what you would pay at home. For most trips, a physical SIM or an eSIM bought on arrival is all you need.

Which network to choose

Albania has two main mobile operators — Vodafone Albania and ONE Albania — plus smaller players. Both sell tourist-oriented prepaid packages with generous data, and coverage between them is broadly similar. You will find official shops and kiosks in every town and at Tirana airport; bring your passport, as registration is required.

Expect a tourist SIM valid for around 30 days, bundled with tens of gigabytes of data, to cost in the region of €10–€15. Top-ups (rimbushje) are sold at phone shops and countless small kiosks marked in the operator's colours.

Coverage and speed

Coverage is strong across cities, the coast, main roads and most of the Riviera. 4G is the norm, and speeds are perfectly good for maps, streaming and calls. The gaps are predictable: deep valleys in the Albanian Alps (parts of Theth, Valbonë and the Koman ferry route), remote mountain passes, and the interiors of some canyons. Download offline maps and any booking details before heading into the highlands.

eSIM, roaming and Wi-Fi

If your phone supports eSIM, a travel eSIM lets you arrive already connected — convenient, though often pricier per gigabyte than a local SIM. EU visitors should check roaming terms: Albania is outside the EU, so standard "roam like at home" rules do not apply, and some operators charge extra. Wi-Fi is widespread and usually free in hotels, cafés and restaurants, though speeds vary.

A few practical notes: keep your passport handy for registration, save your operator's balance-check code, and buy your SIM in a branded shop rather than from an unofficial reseller, so the package is set up correctly.
