What to pack for an Albania trip

Albania asks you to pack for three countries at once. In a single week you can swim off a Riviera beach, wander a stone Ottoman town in the heat, and shiver at a mountain pass above 1,700 metres. Pack light, but pack for range — the mistake most visitors make is dressing only for the postcard beach.

The one thing everyone forgets: shoes for the sea

Most of Albania's famous beaches — Dhërmi, Himarë, Borsh, much of the Riviera — are pebble, not sand, and the shoreline can be sharp underfoot. A cheap pair of water shoes changes your whole trip. Bring a pair, or buy them on arrival; you'll see them for sale in every coastal town.

Layer for the map, not the month

• Coast and cities: breathable summer clothes, swimwear, a sun hat, strong sunscreen and sunglasses. The July–August sun is genuinely fierce.
• Mountains (Theth, Valbonë, Llogara): even in high summer, evenings and passes turn cold. Pack a warm layer and a light rain shell — alpine weather changes fast.
• Hiking: proper trainers or light boots with grip. The Theth–Valbona trail and the paths to the Blue Eye are rocky, not smooth.
• Respectful cover-up: a scarf or light layer to cover shoulders and knees for mosques, churches and the Bektashi tekkes.

Practical odds and ends

Bring a reusable water bottle — tap water is widely drinkable in cities, and refilling saves money and plastic. Carry some cash: cards work in towns, but mountain guesthouses, small tavernas and furgon (minibus) drivers often prefer lekë. European plugs (type C/F, 230V) mean most EU travellers need no adapter; UK and US visitors do. A small first-aid kit, any personal medication, and a power bank for long bus days round it out.

By season, in one line

Summer-only trip: beach kit and one warm layer, just in case. Beach-and-hike (June or September): add the boots and rain shell. Shoulder season (April–May, October): swap flip-flops for closed shoes and pack for changeable weather. Whatever the month, leave a little room in the bag — you'll come home with olive oil, raki and mountain honey.
