Etiquette and customs — what visitors get wrong (and right)
Yes/no head shakes are reversed. Coffee invitations are sacred. Here's what to do — and what to avoid — to fit in like a local.

The classics
- Head shake = yes, head nod = no in some rural areas. Confusing!
- Coffee invitations are not optional — saying no is mildly rude. Sit, sip slowly, talk.
- Hospitality is sacred (besa). Take it seriously.
- Don't refuse food offered at a guesthouse. A small "no thank you" without explanation can offend.
At the table
- Wait for the host to say Të bëftë mirë before starting.
- Raki is sipped, not gulped.
- It's rude to ask for the bill loudly — make eye contact and a slight nod.
In churches & mosques
- Cover knees and shoulders.
- Remove shoes in mosques.
- Don't photograph people praying without consent.
Don't
- Don't rush conversations.
- Don't haggle aggressively in shops (small markets are fine for negotiation).
- Don't refer to Kosovo as anything other than independent.
