Driving in Albania — rules, roads and reality
A car opens up the country, but Albanian roads have a learning curve. What to expect, what to avoid, and which roads are worth the rental.
Side of the road
Right side, like continental Europe.
Quality
- Highways (Tirana–Vlorë, Tirana–Korçë): excellent.
- Riviera coast road: paved but winding, slow.
- Mountain villages: gravel, sometimes 4×4 only.
Driving style
Albanian drivers can overtake aggressively. Be predictable, signal everything, and never assume right of way is respected.
Tolls
Few. Tirana–Kosovo highway has a toll station (€5).
Police
Polite, mostly. Carry your IDP if your home licence isn't in Latin script.
Top scenic drives
- Llogara Pass (Vlorë → Riviera).
- SH75 Përmet → Sarandë (gorges, monasteries).
- Theth road (Shkodër → Theth) — partially rough.
- Lake Komani approach from Shkodër.
