How much does a trip to Albania cost? Real numbers (2026)

Albania still delivers more for your money than almost anywhere on the Mediterranean, but the "dirt-cheap Balkans" label needs an update. Inland cities and the shoulder months remain genuinely inexpensive; the Riviera in July and August has caught up with parts of Greece. What you spend depends far more on when and where you go than on how you travel.

Three honest daily budgets

Backpacker. Hostel dorms, furgon (minibus) travel, byrek and market food, the odd beach day. Expect a lean but comfortable day, especially outside July–August and away from Ksamil.

Mid-range. A private guesthouse or three-star room, dinners of grilled fish and tavë kosi, a rental car for the coast and Alps, a paid excursion or two. This is the sweet spot most travellers land in.

Comfort. Boutique hotels in Tirana, Berat and Gjirokastër, sea-view rooms on the Riviera, seafood without checking the price, private transfers. Still noticeably cheaper than the Italian or Croatian equivalent.

Where the money actually goes

Food and coffee are where Albania shines: an espresso costs a fraction of Western prices, and a full taverna meal with wine stays modest inland. Accommodation is the swing factor — a Ksamil sea-view room in August can cost several times its May rate. Transport is cheap by bus, more by rental car (reckon on fuel plus the daily rate), and organised day trips sit in the middle.

How to keep it low

• Travel in late May–June or September — same sea, half the prices.
• Sleep inland (Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër) and day-trip to the coast.
• Eat where the byrek trays empty fast and the menu isn't translated into five languages.
• Carry cash (lekë) for villages and the mountains; cards work fine in cities.

Budget generously for the two or three experiences you came for — a Riviera boat day, the Theth–Valbona hike, a long lunch above the Osum canyon — and trim the ordinary days. That balance is what still makes Albania feel like a bargain, even now.
