Best traditional restaurants across Albania

Albanian cooking is a Mediterranean-Ottoman-Balkan hybrid built on olive oil, garden vegetables, lamb, fresh cheese and slow baking. The most rewarding meals rarely come from glossy new places; they come from family-run tavernas where a grandmother's recipe still runs the kitchen. Here's how to find them, city by city.

Tirana

The capital is where tradition meets a modern dining scene. Look for restaurants serving tavë kosi (lamb baked under a cloak of yogurt and egg), fërgesë, and stuffed peppers. The revived New Bazaar (Pazari i Ri) is the best single district for honest, market-fed cooking, with grills and mezze houses clustered together.

Berat and the interior

In Berat, dine along the Osum river or up in the old quarters on dishes built around lamb, wild greens and the region's cheeses. Inland towns are where you'll find the deepest, most rustic cooking — offal, slow-roasted meats, hand-rolled pasta like jufka.

The coast and the south

On the Riviera and around Sarandë and Ksamil, tradition means the sea: grilled fish, mussels from the Butrint lagoon, octopus, and olive oil pressed in the hills behind the coast. In Gjirokastër, try qifqi (herbed rice balls) and the town's own baked specialities.

Lake Ohrid

In Pogradec, the star is koran, the endemic Ohrid trout, usually grilled simply with lemon and oil at lakeside tables.
